Good day to all. Since last week featured some Canadian content, this week we'll do something that celebrates the good ole NC weather at this time of year and hit up some surf tunes. Seeing as how it has been in the 60s and 70s up here the last few days, the beach came to mind.
Obviously I've got one pick from the Ventures. Live In Japan '65 would be the source of this classic song : "House of the Rising Sun". If you like surf and don't have this album, pick it up. From the liner notes : "At the time, none of the group spoke any Japanese. The voice you hear opening the '65 concert belongs to a local Filipino club MC named Bing Conception. Taylor (drummer) remembers that Bing also translated a fifteen minute question and answer session between the sets. The Ventures, however, needed no help to get across the music which the Japanese understood and appreciated immediately." Check this out for a little more info on the Ventures.
Next we'll jump to the Los Straitjackets performing "Caveman" off of their first CD, The Utterly Fantastic and Totally Unbelievable Sound of Los Straitjackets.
I'd like to go "local" with the next tune, by local I mean Chapel Hill/Carrboro, N.C. with the infamous Testostertones! I googled them and couldn't find any info and don't have the track names myself, any help out there? (Although I do know that "Chart-toppin'" Chip Hoppin is featured on guitar...) From here, where else but to Link Wray..."Ace of Spades" is off of the two disc set "Mr. Guitar". Check out the sounds he makes.
How 'bout a little Kurt Cobain after that: "Smells Like Teen Spirit" performed by none other than the Aqua Velvets.
My personal favorite would be the Mermen (I've always liked their posters) out of the Bay area. Here I've enclosed an extended portion of them playing live at Grass Valley, CA on 7.28.01. The tunes are as follows:
Pull of the Moon>The Whales>Curve...all from the second set of the show.
Finally I've tacked on an interesting track off the aforementioned Testostertones CD...

As usual feel free to send an email to me with any comments or requests as usual...and if you are interested in being notified when the new weekly tracks are posted fire me an email to let me know...check out the "Song Archives" here.
