Other things to do...
Just a reminder, Burnsville is in a "dry" county meaning that you cannot purchase alcohol here...so if you plan on coming early or staying late be sure to bring any alcoholic beverages you might like to consume...closest store that sells beer to here is about 25 minutes away...plan accordingly.
If you come down early or decide to stay afterwards, here are some things to look into:
- We are right next to the local public pool and skate park...so bring your skateboards and swim gear if you want...the park also has a couple of swings and some horseshoe pits...
- Disc Golf - Mars Hill course (20 minutes from here, tough course)
Asheville (Richmond Hill)....has been redesigned and moved to a different local site...
There are a bunch around...PDGA Directory search...if you come up early or stay late theres a great chance I could be convinced to go check out some of these courses...
- Visit Mount Mitchell : Highest Peak east of the Mississppi at 6800ft about 45 minutes from Burnsville
- Go to the Rhododendron Festival at Roan Mountain (~1 hour drive)
- Go next door to Roan Mountain State Park and check out the balds.
- Go whitewater rafting on the Nolichucky or French Broad...try here or here or head down to the Nantahala river (about 90 minutes from here).
- Cruise the Blue Ridge Parkway
- For the little ones : take'em gemstone mining...!
- While you're up there you can hike to Grassy Creek Falls as well...
- Asheville is of course nearby as well...about 35-45 minutes South
- From our house (elev 2900ft) you can walk up to Phillips Knob (about 2+miles) fire tower and climb up...elev about 4600ft, good view...
- Go to the Swimming Hole on the Pensacola about 5-6 miles from here...
